Teacher, Secondary Reading Teacher

 

Location: La Porte High School

 

*This is a grant-funded position.  

 

Primary Purpose:

 

Provide high-level literacy support for students in grades 9-12 by implementing research-based strategies that focus on direct instruction to develop the competencies and skills necessary for students to be successful readers.  In addition, the Secondary Reading Teacher will also provide high-yield instruction in English language development for English language learners, working collaboratively with teachers and administration to ensure comprehensive supports for language acquisition in content classes.

 

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate or permit with required endorsements for subject-level assigned, including ESL certification
  • Reading Specialist or Master Reading Teacher Certification Preferred
  • Minimum three years teaching experience

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of Literacy
  • Knowledge of research-based strategies in Literacy
  • Knowledge of research-based strategies for English language acquisition
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Knowledge of Literacy TEKS and STAAR
  • Gather and assist in analyzing data and write reports related to Literacy
  • Knowledge of Literacy assessments and resource materials, such as Read 180 and MAP

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Use appropriate core and supplemental intervention materials that align with district and state curriculum to accelerate reading
  • Know how to use and implement a range of effective strategies, and analyze instruction
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established by Individual Education Plans (IEP)
  • Use technologies in the teaching/learning process
  • Assist teachers with the selection of books, and other instructional materials to meet individual literacy needs
  • Attend PLCs and provide support for reading and English language acquisition in content learning as needed

Assessment

  • Consistently assess student achievement through screening, progress monitoring, diagnostic and outcome measures
  • Administer and interpret assessment data to determine adequate progress, or those in need of supplemental or intensive intervention
  • Become familiar with the administration and interpretation of in-depth diagnostic measures or additional assessments commonly used in the school
  • Gather and assist in analyzing data and writing literacy reports

Communication

  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents and community
  • Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in the district and campus staff development
  • Demonstrate interest and initiative in professional
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.

Policy Implementation

  • Keep information of and comply with state, district and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.

Salary:                                

  • $60,000 for Beginning teacher with "0" years experience 
  • $1,000 Master's Degree addenda
  • Additional $1,000 Doctorate Degree addenda

Additional Information:

 

The District contributes $400/month to the cost of employee only health insurance, which is $175/month greater than the state required amount of $225/month.  

 

Pay Grade:  Certified Professional, 10 Duty Months
