Primary Purpose:
Direct and manage the overall program of instrumental music for the district. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), and district requirements. Plan and administer band activities in accordance with campus and district expectations. Plan and prepare to provide students the opportunity to achieve district, region, state, and national recognition.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in an instrumental music field from an accredited university
- Valid Texas Teaching Certificate in subject area assigned
- Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
- Knowledge of state, UIL, and TMEA policies governing band activities
- Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
- Ability to manage budget and personnel
- Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
- Three years teaching and band directing experience
Responsibilities:
- Work with, in cooperation with the Director of Performing and Visual Arts to develop and guide the district Band program to include curriculum vertical alignment, program development, recruitment and retention strategies, Program Improvement Plan development and implementation, effective use of staff schedules and effective support of Junior High and Middle School programs.
- The expectations will include, but not limited to participation of a summer marching band activity (camp). Participation in activities in regards to the program (nights and weekends) including, but not limited to solo and ensemble contests, festivals, band trips, concerts, and community events.
- Direct high school instrumental performers, including concert band, jazz band, soloists, and ensembles.
- Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band.
- Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, limited football games, pep rallies, parades, UIL, and TMEA activities.
- Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL rules, TMEA rules, and local school board policy in the band area.
- Provide supervisory leadership and management to all component groups within band program.
- Provide supervisory leadership and guidance for intermediate and middle school band programs.
- Support band booster club activities if applicable.
- Ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
- Attend all professional development sessions and staff meetings as assigned.
- Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
- Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds as assigned.
- Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within department.
- Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment.
- Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required
- Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations including, but not limited to, the established La Porte ISD curriculum.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal assessments.
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, student handbook, and band handbook.
- Accompany and supervise on all trips.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
- Maintain professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant band directors.
- Work to provide campus, District, and community awareness of band activities and performances.
- Provide supervisory leadership and management to all component groups within band program.
- Provide supervisory leadership and guidance for intermediate and middle school band programs.
- Actively participate in District music events, as assigned, such as pre-UIL, contests, parades, festivals, etc.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Administer and supervise duties of Assistant Band Director(s).
- Administer and supervise all booster club activities.
- Prepare annual program budget, and disburse funds in accordance to District policy.
- Recruit, supervise, and evaluate private lessons instructors for campus
- Monitor/supervise campus private lesson program.
- Communicate with Principal/Counselor regarding scheduling/staffing needs.
Working Conditions:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent district and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather.

The District contributes $400/month to the cost of employee only health insurance, which is $175/month greater than the state required amount of $225/month.

- Salary based on experience
- $1,000 Master's Degree stipend
- Additional $1,000 Doctorate Degree stipend
